Pine Wood Derby Car Specifications and Rules

General

  • The car must have been made this current scouting year (after August 1, 2022).

  • Parents and Cub Scouts should work together on the car.

  • Car must be made from an official kit from BSA Scout Shop

Dimensions

  • Width must not exceed 2 3⁄4”.

  • Length must not exceed 7”.

  • Height must not exceed 6”.

  • Width between wheels must be 1 3⁄4”.

  • Bottom clearance between the car and the track must be at least 3/8”.

Weight

  • Weight must not exceed 5.0 ounces.

  • No loose materials or sliding weights allowed.

NOTE: Scales will vary, so be prepared to make adjustments at check-in!

Wheels and Axles

  • Wheels and axles must be original from an official BSA kit.

  • Wheels and axles may not be modified in any way, except to remove manufacturing imperfections and polish.

Misc.

  • No wheel bearings, washers or bushings allowed

  • Car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices, and no springs allowed.

  • Wheel/axel lubrication is permitted, but must not be deemed excessive (must pass the cleanliness portion of the inspection).

  • Creative detailing is encouraged and allowed, using additional materials, such as wood, metal or plastic, as long as the car fits dimensions and other specifications and rules.

  • Car must pass the inspection committee. If you don’t follow the rules, your car may be disqualified!

Style Awards

  • Scouts will judge their peers for the winners in the following categories:​

    • Most American Car

    • Shiniest Car

    • Foodiest Car

    • Strangest Shaped Car

    • Best Imagination Car

    • and Schooliest Car.
